Surgical Orthodontics

Surgical Orthodontics (Orthognathic Treatment)

In some cases, orthodontic treatment alone is not enough to fully correct a bite. When significant jaw discrepancies are present, surgical orthodontics, also known as orthognathic treatment, may be recommended.

This approach combines orthodontic care with jaw surgery to create proper alignment of the teeth and jaws.

When Is Surgical Treatment Considered?

Surgical orthodontics may be appropriate when:

• The upper and lower jaws do not align properly
• A severe overbite, underbite, or open bite is present
• Facial imbalance is caused by jaw positioning
• Bite correction cannot be achieved with braces or aligners alone

Because jaw growth must be complete, this type of treatment is typically recommended for adults.

How the Process Works

Surgical orthodontic treatment is carefully planned and coordinated.

Treatment generally involves:

  1. Orthodontic preparation to align the teeth before surgery

  2. Jaw surgery performed by an oral and maxillofacial surgeon

  3. Post-surgical orthodontic refinement to finalize the bite

Throughout the entire process, Dr. Lindsay Stearn works closely with trusted surgical specialists to ensure coordinated, comprehensive care.

Is Surgery Always Necessary?

Not at all. Most orthodontic cases can be treated without surgery. A comprehensive evaluation, including digital scans and imaging, allows us to determine whether surgical treatment is truly indicated.

If surgery is not necessary, alternative treatment options will be discussed.

Recovery and Results

Recovery from jaw surgery varies by case, but most patients return to normal routines within a few weeks. Final orthodontic detailing typically continues for several months after surgery.

When properly planned, surgical orthodontics can dramatically improve bite function, facial balance, and long-term stability.

If you have been told you may need jaw surgery, or would like a second opinion, we would be happy to evaluate your case and discuss your options.
