Frequently Asked Questions About Orthodontics
Will I see Dr. Stearn at every appointment?
Yes. Dr. Lindsay Stearn personally designs and oversees every treatment plan and sees patients at every visit. Your care is never passed between providers.
What happens at the consultation?
Your consultation includes a comprehensive orthodontic evaluation and a digital scan of your teeth. The scan allows us to review your bite together on screen and clearly discuss your treatment options.
In many cases, treatment can begin the same day if you are ready.
Do you treat adults?
Absolutely. Orthodontic treatment is not limited to children and teens. Many adults choose braces or clear aligners to improve their smile and bite.
When should my child first see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an initial evaluation around age seven. This does not always mean treatment starts at that age, but it allows us to monitor growth and intervene at the right time if needed.
What types of treatment do you offer?
We offer early growth guidance and expanders, traditional metal braces, and clear aligner therapy, including Invisalign® and other advanced aligner systems. Every plan is fully customized and carefully monitored from start to finish.
How long does treatment take?
Treatment time depends on the individual and the complexity of the case. Most comprehensive treatments range between 12 and 24 months, though some may be shorter and others longer. During your consultation, we will give you a realistic estimate based on your specific needs.
Do braces hurt?
Braces and aligners do not typically “hurt,” but it is normal to feel mild soreness for a few days after they are placed or adjusted. This means your teeth are responding to treatment.
The discomfort is temporary and usually managed easily with over-the-counter pain relief if needed. Most patients adjust quickly.
How often are appointments scheduled?
Most patients are seen every four to eight weeks, depending on their treatment plan. Progress is evaluated carefully at each visit.
What happens when treatment is finished?
When treatment is complete, braces, attachments, or appliances are removed and retainers are delivered the same day. Instructions are reviewed in detail to help protect your new smile.
How long do I need to wear my retainer?
Retainers are essential to maintaining your results.
After treatment, retainers are typically worn full time as directed during the initial stabilization period. Once your teeth are stable, wear transitions to nighttime only.
Nighttime retainer wear should continue indefinitely. Teeth naturally shift over time, and consistent retainer use is the best way to preserve your smile.
What if I lose or break my retainer?
If a retainer is lost or damaged, contact the office as soon as possible. The sooner it is replaced, the less likely teeth are to shift. Replacement retainers can be made quickly to keep your results on track.
Do I still need to see my dentist during treatment?
Yes. Regular dental cleanings and exams every six months are important throughout orthodontic treatment to maintain overall oral health.
